It’s no secret that I love using layers on my cards. During all my years of donating cards to Operation Write Home, I learned the importance of good quality cards. Quality is always better than quantity. (The organization is now closed, by the way.)

Quite often, I am asked, Why use so many layers? Does it make my cards too thick? Aren’t I concerned about the cost of buying extra paper?

So I decided to do a blog post, as well as a video, to compare the difference between using layers verses not using layers in card making. Watch the video below or click HERE to see it on YouTube.

Since I made sure to use papers that didn’t compete with each other, the overall look of the card with no layers is good. Especially since I used a heavy weight card stock for the card base.

But the card with layers really pops in comparison. The black matting adds contrast and also makes it easier to mix different pattern papers.

No matter who the card recipient is, I want them to know I didn’t just quickly slap papers together. For me, layers make a big difference. I don’t mind the little extra expense of buying solid cardstock for layers. Everyone has their own style of card making and I think it’s important to find what works best for you.

  • I loved the video, Kristie! Thank you! Since you don't always mat with black, do you usually use Recollections paper for the mats or a different brand? Thanks so much for your inspiration!

  • Thank you, Tricia! The other cardstock I use is a variety of different brands. I have way too much of it. But when I do have to purchase a specific color, it's usually Bazzill. Although if the Recollections brand has the right color, I would definitely buy that first.

  • I like both card and you are right that the matting really makes that card stand out. These papers are really fun!

  • Great video and comparison! I love the look of your cards with the black matting and have found myself using it a lot. I will have to check out Recollections since I do find my cards too thick sometimes when I'm using what I already have on hand. Thanks for the tip!

  • Thank you, Kristi! Using black for matting is always my first choice, especially since the black cardstock is less expensive. But sometimes, it's just not the right color and I will use a thicker paper if it's all I have. I'd still rather include layers, even if it makes my cards a bit thicker. Have a wonderful day!

  • A picture is worth a thousand words. The layered card definitely has a finished look to it! Thanks for sharing!
