January is Glaucoma Awareness month. It’s probably a disease many people don’t think about very often. But did you know that over 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma? It’s called the “sneak thief of sight” because there are no symptoms and once the vision is lost, it’s gone for good. According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. While there is currently no cure, vision loss can be slowed or prevented with early detection.
I was diagnosed with glaucoma in my late 30’s. I’m so grateful for medical advancements that made it possible to detect the disease in the early stages. And perhaps, in my lifetime a cure will be found.
I share this with you as a reminder to get your eyes checked every year. It’s a simple and pain-free test. And it just may save your sight.
I’ve been making a Glaucoma Awareness card for the past several years to share on my blog. But this year, I decided to also record a video. Watch the video below or click HERE to see it on YouTube.
I used lots of Love From Lizi’s peel off stickers to create the lovely shiny background.
Sketch – MFT #416
Sentiment – Computer generated
Paper – Heidi Kress
Peel Off stickers – Love From Lizi
Ribbon die – Paper Smooches (die is retired)
Banner die – MFT
Pattern paper –

For more information about glaucoma:
Thank you for the reminder to get my eyes checked! Your card is terrific – the green peel offs are amazing and I really like how you put the 3 silvery ones under the green ribbon. I hope you continue to manage your glaucoma and I do hope for a cure sometime soon!
My MIL has Glaucoma and I appreciate the attention you draw to this.
Your cards are always just lovely and I know you donate many. What do you use your Glaucoma one for? Do you mail your Dr? Send to the Glaucoma Foundation? Mail to researchers? Or donate to a Dr for their mailing? Curiosity and the cat, you know!
(BTW, I would have guessed you under 30 if someone had asked, but then I don’t really ‘know’ you!)
Thank you, Jennifer! I'm happy to provide a reminder for everyone to get their eyes checked. I'm grateful my eye doctor has been monitoring my eyes so carefully. Currently, my disease is stable. But someday, I will probably need laser surgery. I'm hoping for a cure as well.
Thank you, Diane! I'm sorry to hear about your MIL. Thank goodness for medical advancements that can detect and treat the disease early before complete blindness hits.
I give my eye doctor all my glaucoma cards. He uses them in January to help promote glaucoma awareness month. But my main reason for even making the cards is to remind people to get their eyes tested. So many people think glaucoma only affects those over 50. But I'm proof that isn't always the case.
I'm definitely not under 30. I do have a 16 year old son after all. But I've been told I look very young. So thank you! 🙂
YOU have a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD!
Lol! I do have a 16-year old. And I was in my 20's when I had him. 🙂
