Hello friends! I get a lot of questions about card sketches. The Number 1 question is How Do I Choose Which Card Sketches to use? I decided it was finally time to make a video about card sketches and answer some of the most asked questions.
I used an older paper pad by Doodlebug Design called Lovebugs for my card examples. While this isn’t a card process video, I do show how to select sketches based on different things you may want to feature on a card. I also explain how I figure out the measurements for sketches that don’t already include them.
Watch the video below or click HERE to see it on YouTube.
For my first card, I selected a sketch with a large image box so I could feature some pretty pattern papers.
This sketch works great for the small pattern paper scraps.
Sketch – MFT #394 Paper – Doodlebug Design – Lovebugs collection Pierced heart die – Honey Bee Stamps Sentiment stamp – Pink & Main Bling – Honey Bee Stamps Ink – Reverse Confetti Banner die – American Crafts (retired)
For my final card, I used a cover up die instead of a sketch. The dies are great for featuring several different pattern papers on one card.
Paper – Doodlebug Design – Lovebugs collection Scallop Hearts die – Studio Katia Sentiment stamp – Pink & Main Bling – Honey Bee Stamps

Very nice explanation of figuring out sketch measurements and selecting sketches! I admit I sometimes reject a sketch due to measurement not being exactly what I have, but I have been pretty successful at looking beyond the dimensions and altering things based on my needs. Super cute paper pad, too, and now you have a head start of some valentine’s day cards! lol. Thanks for another great video!!
Thanks Jennifer! I put a lot of thought into this video and did my best to explain everything. I’m always modifying the sketches, so the measurements or shapes on the sketch don’t hold me back. Lol! Bonus to have a few Valentine/s day cards finished in October.
Kristi, this video was fantastic!! Thank you! I love that you shared a number of options for each style – that helped me “see it” better. And for explaining how you chose which paper to go with which layer. That was helpful, too. You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent with us!!
All of the cards for this post are A2 size. 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″. I buy the cardstock for my card bases in bulk from a local paper company. I pay them to cut the cardstock to card base sizes. Some are vertical cards and others are horizontal cards. I like to have the fold of all my cards at the top.
Hi Kristie, This was a helpful video. I love your new website. It’s really nice. I am following you on Facebook now, as for some reason Youtube stopped sending notifications of new videos. Hope you and your family are well

I can tell that it was well planned and executed. It’s sometimes hard to explain how your brain works when it’s on “auto”, but you did well! 🙂

Thank you so much Tricia! I put a lot of thought into this video. It’s stuff I just do all the time. Lol!
What is the card measurements for the tall card folded at top, open at bottom? How do you cut the 8.5 x 11 paper?
